Song written by Bill Anderson and made famous by Cal Smith. The song was recorded on March 12, 1972, at Bradley’s Barn, Mount Juliet, Tennessee and released, in November 1972.

Bill Anderson one of the great composers of Nashville, composed his songs for him, and many of his co-workers. The inspiration for this song came to him, having dinner with his wife Becky, in a restaurant near his church, they were having a glass of wine, while they dined leisurely, in a moment of the night they entered the restaurant, the most faithful members of their congregation. When he saw them enter, Bill hid the cup behind a menu, with the intent, that they would not see him drinking alchool. But his wife, Becky, said, “Hey, the Lord knows I’m drinking,” where This is the problem, Bill immediately picked up his pen, and on a paper napkin he wrote the whole song, while his wife finished dinner.

Many artists rejected the song, mixing the lord with the drink, but Cal Smith, who at that time began a solo career, after leaving the band of Ernest Tubb, in 1967, in 1971, on Decca Records, here, I record his first success that would reach the number 4 position of the lists, with the song, “I’ve Found Someone Of My Own,”

Smith fixed on Bill Anderson’s song, and instinctively, he saw that song would be a success. He asked for it to be included in the Decca album, ” I’ve Found Someone Of My Own, “which would be the first job for Decca Records (1972), and eighth of his career. The Lord knows I’m drinking, I arrived at number one on March 3, 1973. Being the first number one of Cal Smith’s career

Cal Smith The Lord Knows I’m Drinking Lyrics

Hello, Mrs. Johnson
You self-righteous woman
Sunday School teacher
What brings you out slumming

Do you reckon the preacher
Would approve where you are
Standing here, visiting
With a back sliding Christian
In a neighborhood bar

Well, yes, that’s my bottle
And, yes, that’s my glass
And I see you’re eyeballing
This pretty young lass

It ain’t none of your business
But, yes, she’s with me
And we don’t need no sermon
You self-righteous woman
Just let us be

[Chorus:]
The Lord knows I’m drinking
(The Lord knows I’m drinking)
And running around
(And running around)
And He don’t need your
Loud mouth informing the town
The Lord knows I’m sinning
(The Lord knows I’m sinning)
And sinning ain’t right
(And sinning ain’t right)
But me and the Good Lord’s gonna
Have us a good talk later tonight

Goodbye, Mrs. Johnson
You self-righteous biddy
I don’t need your preaching
And I don’t need your pity

So, go back to whatever
You hypocrites do
And when I talk to Heaven
Be nice and I’ll put in
A good word for you
