Dee Jee Overbey (Donna McCall). once married to Dennis Digby, who was road manager and bassist for Cal Smith when he left that job to start playing bass for Loretta Lynn. Donna was a back up singer with The Carol Lee Singers on The Grand Ole Opry, and also was a backup singer for Connie Smith, a slot she relinquished when daughter Amber Digby, was two, and she later went to work for Ronnie Milsap Enterprises. Donna’s brother is well-established country artist Darrell McCall, and her sister Diane McCall had her own solo career in the ’60s and also worked with Charlie Louvin. The youngest McCall, Donna’s brother, Dennis, played bass for Barbara Mandrell in the ’70s. And when Donna remarried when Amber was nine, the groom was legendary steel player Dicky Overbey, who was in Milsap’s band at the time and who had played with the likes of Faron Young, Johnny Bush, Sammi Smith, Connie Smith and Hank Williams, Jr.
Today, Dee Jee Overbey is as strong as ever and performing all over Nashville, Tennessee, Texas and beyond. Her collaboration with legendary Country Music writer, singer and musician, Chuck Cusimano, has brought many rewards to them both in writing and singing together. I’ve heard them describe the art of writing across the miles by phone on many collaborations. In 2019 they were awarded The Academy of Western Artists Award for Pure Country “Duo of The Year” for a song written and performed by them, “Rhymes Without Reason”. Here is the latest release from Dee Jee Overbey…in collaboration with Chuck Cusimano…”With Love”. (There is an on the air interview with Dee Jee Overbey and Chuck Cusimano, done by Scott Wikle of My Kind of Country Radio Show below with a great deal of information)
