Song written by Harlan Sanders & Rick Beresford, was recorded for George Jones for the Epic label, on April 16, 1980, at Columbia Recording Studio, 34 Music Sq. East, Nashville, TN, with the production of Billy Sherrill, was released in December 1980. In the lists of U.S. Hot Country Singles, reached number # 8, and number # 22 on the Canadian RPM Country Tracks lists.

The song was included in the studio album, I Am What I Am (Epic 1980), was released on September 8, 1980, and reached number # 8 on the lists of US Top Country Albums. In the year 2000, remastered in CD format, 4 bonus tracks was added for this edition. The album was certified platinum record in USA, and gold record in Canada.

In 1981, Jones’ career continued to prosper after the remarkable success of his hit single # 1 “He Stopped Loving Her Today”. After experiencing a break in his career in the late seventies, the song revived the career of the singer in the charts; in 1980 it obtained a success number 2 with “Two Story House”, a duet with its ex- wife Tammy Wynette, and reached number 2 again with its interpretation of the composition of Tom T. Hall “I am not ready yet”.

However, the rise in his professional life brought little peace to his staff; Persecuted by a cocaine addiction from a year ago and for almost thirty years of drinking problems, he continued to miss shows, involving the police in high-speed chases, and showed up at the obviously drunk prize shows to accept honors for “I’ve Stopped Loving Her Today.”

This song was perfectly adapted to the life I was living in those moments, when drinking more than 20 bottles was a regular practice, and Tammy’s memories did not stop chasing him.

Nobody sings songs about pain and repentance like George Jones does. He has had a tumultuous career, recurring episodes of alcoholism and an unpleasant public divorce with his former partner and ex-wife, the late Tammy Wynette. However, Jones has been able to stand and move on.

George Jones – If Drinkin’ Don’t Kill Me (Her Memory Will) Lyrics

[Verse 1]
The bars are all closed
It’s four in the morning
Must have shut ’em all down by the shape that I’m in
I lay my head on the wheel and the horn begins honking
The whole neighborhood knows
That I’m home drunk again

[Chorus]
If drinking don’t kill me, her memory will
I can’t hold out much longer, the way that I feel
With the blood from my body, I could start my own still
But if drinking don’t kill me her memory will

[Verse 2]
These will old bones they move slow
But so sure of their footsteps
As I trip on the floor and I lightly touch down
Lord, it’s been ten bottles since I tried to forget her
But the memory still lingers lying here on the ground

[Chorus]
If drinking don’t kill me, her memory will
I can’t hold out much longer, the way that I feel
With the blood from my body, I could start my own still
But if drinking don’t kill me her memory will
