Hank Williams performs “I Saw The Light”. Live video.

The inspiration of the song, came to him, when he returned from a show at Fort Deposit, Alabama, in January 1947. Hank was sitting in the back seats of the car, drunk, like so many other times, when they were approaching Montgomery, Alabama , passed near the airport of Dannelly Field, his mother woke him up, and in his drunken state, seeing the lights of the airport, exclaimed, "I saw the light". On January 26 he wrote the first draft of this song.

Hank Williams – I Saw The Light Lyrics

I wandered so aimless life filled with sin
I wouldn’t let my dear saviour in
Then Jesus came like a stranger in the night
Praise the Lord I saw the light.

I saw the light I saw the light
No more darkness no more night
Now I’m so happy no sorrow in sight
Praise the Lord I saw the light.

Just like a blind man I wandered along
Worries and fears I claimed for my own
Then like the blind man that God gave back his sight
Praise the Lord I saw the light.

I saw the light I saw the light
No more darkness no more night
Now I’m so happy no sorrow in sight
Praise the Lord I saw the light.

I was a fool to wander and a-stray
Straight is the gate and narrow the way
Now I have traded the wrong for the right
Praise the Lord I saw the light.

I saw the light I saw the light
No more darkness no more night
Now I’m so happy no sorrow in sight
Praise the Lord I saw the light.
