Hank was sitting in the back seats of the car, drunk, like so many other times, when they were approaching Montgomery, Alabama , passed near the airport of Dannelly Field, his mother woke him up, and in his drunken state, seeing the lights of the airport, exclaimed, “I saw the light”. On January 26 he wrote the first draft of this song.){kind=link}
